2) Develop Seed:
Most experiences in life are small daily ones, but other events and decisions carry great weight. Your question should reflect what you feel, see, or expect. It sets the stage for a randomly generated answer - a primary hexagram.

3) Seek Guidance:
Write question down. Gather three coins. Assign three to heads (3) and two to tails (2).
Toss the three coins together. They will land in one of four ways. See left. Toss coins six times to build a primary hexagram from the bottom up.
4) Receive Advice:
In Elaine's example below, the primary hexagram is completed with active lines 9 and 6 changed into their opposite line images to form the static hexagram. Use the Master Map to identify both hexagrams by Change Cycle number, name, and traditional number. Review the primary hexagram counsel of your favorite I Ching. Set aside the static hexagram until you have the reading change cycle.

5) Open to Potential:
Since two active lines were received, they independently change polarity. Two secondary hexagrams were realized. Use Master Map to identify. At this point no order exists between related hexagrams. Only related hexagrams were found and identified. See below.

6) Put Chaos in Order:
Use Change Cycle numbers to put related hexagrams into a reading change cycle. Elaine received 51c Difficult Beginnings 3t; 58c Return 24t (primary); 62c Holding Together 8t (static); and, 64c Receptive 2t.

7) Trust in Course:
The Change Cycle gives a past, present, and potential future framework to our experiences, which are interconnected by the actions and counsel of the individual lines. Active lines link experiences by representing a particular decision or action. One hexagram changing into the next. Once you understand the past, you are empowered to change the future. Apply the right decision at the right moment to forever change the direction of life.
8) Calm Devotion:
The Change Cycle imprints Universal order on your I Ching reading hexagrams and the counsel it offers. Follow the hexagram sequence as you read your I Ching. I suggest writing active line text out as if it's a story. Keep in mind: the question and primary hexagram represent current events. Its active lines counsel the decisions and events we face. When we act as counseled, the experience changes to the next in progressive order. Some experiences occurred before you developed the question, and something will happen afterward. This is revealed by your reading change cycle. Match your reading change cycle to real events and discover how to manage unfolding events.
We experience hexagrams in Change Cycle order as the continual temporal unfolding of decisions reflected by active line counsel.
Special Status: Primary static hexagrams
The six lines of a primary static hexagram form a web of seven related hexagrams. The Change Cycle imprints order on these linked hexagrams. Some hexagrams are historic to your primary hexagram because you might notice past events in line text, and the need to make a different decision, while other hexagrams are predictive because the line guidance to the outcome is clear. Follow the line's counsel to a positive outcome. Whether you are receptive to redo a decision or are creative to charge ahead, pursue your dreams with conscious awareness and conscientious action. The I Ching offered its ancient wisdom.
